Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean the volcanic islands of Madeira are a refuge of natural beauty. Between the blue of the sea and the emerald green of the vegetation, the exotic colours of the flowers enchant visitors on an archipelago where two thirds of the territory is protected. The spring-like temperature all year round and varied terrain makes it ideal for outdoor activities. The green, rugged Pico Ruivo is particularly popular with hikers. The islands’ oceanic location and the subsequent frequency and quality of waves has earned it a reputation as an outstanding surf location. Diving is also popular along the islands’ coasts and various boat trips offer the opportunity for dolphin and whale spotting.
