The city is perhaps the most popular domestic package tour destination, and Europeans are following suit. Despite being quite a party town, the carnival in Fortaleza is rather feeble, though growing bigger by the year, with the largest parades being maracatu-style. As the capital and largest city of Amazonas and the gateway to the natural wonders of the Amazon Rainforest, Manaus is one of Brazil’s most visited destinations. Although the city is usually a stopover for visitors heading into the jungle, it does offer a couple of its own attractions such as museums and monuments where you can get an insight into the local history and culture.
