Machico lies on the eastern side of Madeira and was the first landing spot of the Portuguese on the island during the Age of Discovery. Home to a sandy beach and a great starting point for hikes through the island's lush mountainous landscapes and unique levadas, Machico makes a great spot for both relaxation and adventure. The town itself boasts a tranquil atmosphere, with a number of guesthouses, hotels and seafood restaurants as well as historic churches and museums.

Porto Moniz lies on the northwest corner of Madeira Island, and is best known for its incredible natural pools that make it a popular day trip from the capital. Relax in the crystal clear waters that overlook the Atlantic Ocean, and head into the surroundings where hiking trails through towering mountains, scenic coastal paths and lush forests await. Though small, it's worth spending at least a day or two here to fully soak up the tranquil atmosphere and take in the picturesque surroundings.
