Madrid is fantastic at any time of the year, but when the mercury really rises the locals flee to less stifling locations. Segovia is 70km from Madrid but with a relaxing small-town Spanish vibe. The plazas and side-streets are perfect for a glass of wine or beer, while the 160-arch Roman aqueduct in the shadow of which the town lies provides a stunning backdrop. Nearby Ávila is similarly picturesque, its crown jewel the remarkably complete castle walls. With numerous gates and towers the walls are walkable in large parts and lit spectacularly at night. Aside from being a lively and international university town Salamanca is, even by Spanish standards, an architectural marvel, with ornate university buildings, churches, and bridges.

The village has a long history dating as far back as pre-Roman times and its influences can be spotted in the mixture of architectural styles, from Baroque churches filled with religious shrines to the Jewish and Arabic style buildings in its labyrinth of narrow streets.
